OUR PARENT TRAINING

At ABA Academy, we offer ABA training to parents and caregivers in an individualized One to One session.

​​

Effective therapy for autism involves all family members. We understand the importance of having parents and caregivers involved in the therapy process and to aid in helping their children grow. 

 

Parent/caregiver training is for those who want a little more in addition to regularly scheduled training sessions offered within their program or those who just simply want to gain knowledge to problem solve some of their child's skill development.

ABA Academy offers parent and caregiver training for current program registrants as well as those who prefer to hold off on registering their child in a program. 

​

Parent and caregiver training is based on a Behaviour Skills Training (BST) model and is provided by a Board Certified  Behaviour Analyst (BCBA)

​

  • 1 session

  • 10 sessions

Each session is one hour in length.

Program Locations:

We offer programs across the Greater Toronto Area and surrounding areas.

  • Home-based: in the child's or caregiver's home

  • Community-based: in school, daycare, nursery school, or other community settings​

  • Online: Via Zoom or Google Meet

Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is the process of systematically applying interventions, based upon the principles of learning theory, to improve socially significant behaviors to a meaningful degree. The ABA approach teaches social, motor, and verbal behaviors, as well as reasoning skills. ABA therapy is especially useful in teaching behaviors to children with autism who may otherwise not “pick up” these behaviors on their own, as other kids would. The ABA approach can be used by a parent, counselor, or certified behavior analyst. ABA therapy for autism uses careful behavioral observation and positive reinforcement or prompting to teach each step of a behavior. A kid’s behavior is reinforced with a reward when he or she performs each of the steps correctly. Undesirable behaviors, or those that interfere with learning and social skills, are watched closely. The goal is to determine what happens to trigger a behavior, and what happens after that behavior to reinforce it. The idea is to remove these triggers and reinforcers from the child’s environment. New reinforcers are then used to teach the child a different behavior in response to the same trigger. ABA therapy for autism can include any of several established teaching tools, including discrete trial training, incidental teaching, pivotal response training, fluency building, and verbal behavior (VB). In discrete trial training, an ABA practitioner gives a clear instruction about a desired behavior (for example, “Pick up the paper”). If the child responds correctly, the behavior is reinforced (for example, “Great job! Have an M&M”). If the child doesn’t respond correctly, the practitioner gives a gentle prompt (for example, places kid’s hand over the paper). The hope is that the child will eventually learn to generalize the correct response.

Our mission is to be a leader in quality and needs-based therapy and education for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other developmental delays from 1 to 15 years old. Our vision is to offer a unique individualized curriculum focusing on advancing each child's quality of life and to help each child reach their full potential. ABA Academy's therapists possess in-depth knowledge of the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). They are supervised by Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) who abide by the Professional and Ethical Compliance Code for Behavior Analysts. All staff meet Ontario Autism Program requirements. Our Clinical Supervisor and Senior Therapist Carol Shum, MAds, BCBA. Carol holds a Master of Applied Disability Studies degree from Brock University and has been a Board Certified Behavior Analyst since 2015. She started in the field of developmental disabilities in 2003 and has extensive experience in behavioral and developmental assessments, treatment development and supervision in a variety of settings and with a broad range of clients of different ages and with varying degrees of needs. Carol's work experience includes provincially funded programs for children and teenagers with developmental diagnoses, consultation with school professionals, and provision of clinical oversight of comprehensive and focused ABA services for children and adolescents with autism and other developmental disabilities.

ABA Therapy (ABA) is an evidence-based treatment using Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) principles. Its naturalistic approach demonstrates remediation of the core symptoms of autism and/or used to develop new skills.  It can help target many intermediate to advanced goals such as conversation skills, academic supports, group / classroom instructions, social skills, expressive language and many other individualized targets.  Progress is tracked through many data driven measurement tools.
